Second edukalibre project meeting

by admin last modified 2004-07-08 08:53 PM

Here is the information about the second edukalibre project meeting in Porto.

Location

The second meeting will take place on Porto in July 9th-10th, 2004

First of all, our meeting will be at "FEUP" (indicated by a red 1 in the map attached) which stands for "Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto" (Engineering School of the University of Porto). It is located next to the largest hospital in Porto: "São João Hospital" (red H in the map). The airport is about 9 km in the direction indicated by the arrow.

I will first talk about hotels and further down I will give you some URLs where you can find more info or even book one of them. The nearest hotel, about 1.5 km away, is "Beta Porto Hotel" (number 2 in the map). There is also a "residencial" (boarding house) nearby, about 1 km away, called "Residencial Palanca" (6 in the map). It is a four-star "residencial" which seems to me comparable to three-star hotels. Another "residencial" nearby is "Pensão Paulo Cesar" (7 in the map) this one is much cheaper and humble (basically, a small family house).

Hotels are expensive in Porto, but taxi fares are very cheap, as long as you do not go out of the metropolitan area. Therefore, it might be worth booking a hotel in the downtown area (3 in the map) which is about 4 kilometers away, and taking a taxi. That way you will be closer to the tourist attractions. Two nice, affordable hotels are "Hotel da Bolsa" (4) and "Hotel Mercure Batalha" (5).

I leave 15 km south of FEUP, by the beach (Madalena Beach). I can host two people (even more if you're willing to sleep on a sleeping bag :) and bring you to the meeting place. You would not be near the nice historical buildings in Porto, but you would have nice beaches, swimming pool and tennis courts. It is not a problem for me because I live alone in a two-bedroom apartment (I have a son who stays overweekends but that weekend he will stay at his mom's).

A very nice site has been set up by my physics colleagues, who are hosting an international conference in June. You can look at their travel advice and practical information at their site
