What is Edukalibre?

Edukalibre is a project funded by the European Comission under the Socrates/Minerva program (aimed at the promotion of information and communications technology in education). Its main goal is to explore new ways of producing educational materials, based in the practices and procedures observed in the libre (free, open source) software development community. Some of the key aspects being explored are the stress on collaborative development, the interaction with users, and the use of version control systems for documentation, in the context of the educational communities. In the end, we are proposing tools and procedures for the creation of educational materials.

What is being developed exactly?

Specifically, we are creating some tools that allow users to create educational material in a collaborative way, adding some extra functionality to this process, like version control system of the documents, automatic conversions to several formats (html, pdf, ps, ...) or different ways of editing and updating the documents: with an editor, via a web form, ...

Which functionality does the system provide?

As you'll see, the main basic idea of the software is to have documents, which have always a base format that allows us to perform interesting operations over them, at the moment these base formats are Docbook and Latex. These documents are stored in a version control system (subversion at the moment) that allow the users to have available the history of every document. And every document is converted to several formats automatically (html, pdf, ps, text, ...).

These documents can be created in a collaborative way between different people, and different ways are provided to modify and update these documents. But much more functionality is being implemented, and some integration with a LCMS (Learning Content Management system) is done now with moodle.

Do you need a demonstration of the system?

If you want to give a try to the Edukalibre system, please feel free to test it from the next testing site:

Which license does the software developed have?

One important idea of the project is that all the development will use libre software, and all the software developed will be released under a libre software license.

Current state of the project

Some months ago, we finished the development of the first version of the whole system, which you can try here or download the packages to be installed here

Right now we are working in the next version of the system, with a new system architecture which will be described in a detailed document very soon.

Are you interested in the project?
