Press Releases:
The Edukalibre project releases software for teachers and pupils from all around the world to collaborate on creation of educational material. 2005-06-08
The Edukalibre Project, leaded by the Rey Juan Carlos University and founded by the European Commission, has released the first version of the software that is being developed to allow the collaborative creation of educational material. This software uses the Internet to help teachers and students to create together any kind of text (notes, papers, books, etc.), with no need for geographic proximity.
For instance, a teacher in a university in Madrid can create the first version of a book which may be used by teachers and students from different points all around Europe, who at the same time will be able to correct and improve the contents of the book.
The Edukalibre Project is being developed within the European Minerva program, for the introduction of new technologies in the classrooms, and there are six institutions cooperating on it in Sweden, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Germany, Portugal and Spain, coordinated by Jesús M. González Barahona, from the Rey Juan Carlos university.
The application of Internet-based information systems in educational environments is being the object of a strong interest by educational institutions of all kinds and specially by universities. This growing interest is mainly due to the fact that the implantation of this kind of systems can be very simple, cheap and does not require too much effort from the users, as the Internet is becoming more and more familiar for everyone. Also, these systems can provide the educational environments with all the possibilities that the Internet has in content management, multimedia, assisted distance learning, unattended collaboration, etc.
In this context, the software produced by the Edukalibre Project tries to advance in the line of providing educational institutions with suitable tools for the maximal exploitation of all the advantages offered by these new approaches to education. Moreover, the project tries to translate and adapt the customs and typical procedures of the Libre Software development model (such as distant collaboration or exhaustive version control) to the learning environments.
One of the main products of the project is the Edukalibre Platform, a set of software tools designed specifically for that task, that are being distributed as Libre Software.
The Edukalibre Platform allows the creation of repositories for the collaborative edition and management of documentation through the Internet and it is composed of three main modules: "Conversion Tools", a software tool capable of converting electronic documents to different formats (such as PDF, OpenOffice, HTML, LaTeX or Docbook); "Collab", a web-based interface to facilitate users the interaction with the system; "Repository Manager", the module in charge of storage and version control of the different documents in the system.
This software is now under a heavy and constant development and improvement process and the firsts versions are already available and working. Among others, tests in real environments are being carried out like in the Software Libre subject in the Computing and Mathematical Modeling PhD program in the Rey Juan Carlos University, where the students use the Edukalibre Platform to create the papers for their evaluation at the end of the term. In this same line, there also exist test groups in real courses in the School of Computing in the Leeds University, the Institute for Industrial Production in the Karlsruhe University and in the Institute of Information Theory and Automation in the Science Academy of Prague.
